The cupola (the small, windowed projection on the roof) was introduced in the 1860s, credited to conductor T.B. Watson of the Chicago & North Western Railroad.

Its main function was to provide an elevated lookout for crew members to watch the train for problems like "hot boxes" (overheating wheel bearings) or shifted loads.

The off-center cupola caboose is a significant design variation that emerged during the evolution of the iconic train car. The primary reason for placing the cupola off-center was to better utilize the interior space of the caboose.

Generally, off-center cupola designs were more prevalent among Western railroads, while center cupola designs were more often preferred by Eastern railroads, though numerous exceptions existed on both sides.
