The "Russian Iron" finish (also known as planished iron) was a highly prized 19th and early 20th-century metal preservation technique. It involved hammering graphite/oils into the iron, resulting in a dark, glossy, and sometimes blue-tinted metallic finish that was highly resistant to rust.
2-8-8-8-2 Class P-1 Triplex
Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1914 and 1915.
It used THREE sets of driving engines (cylinders and wheels) under a single boiler, making it a 2-8-8-8-2.
The front and middle engines used low-pressure steam, while the rear engine (under the tender) used high-pressure steam.
It was designed to push massive freight trains up steep grades (like the Susquehanna Hill) in New York, theoretically capable of pulling a train 5 miles long.
Slow moving and hardly maintainable, the triplexes were not considered highly successful, and were decommissioned by 1933.
