Alco S2 diesel switcher locomotive, Hamersley Iron #007 lettered as "Mabel", built originally in 1940 in the USA, Mabel is recognized as one of the oldest diesel-electric locomotives in Australia.
It was imported to Australia in September 1965 by Hamersley Iron. It holds extreme historical significance because it served as the primary construction locomotive to lay the tracks for the Hamersley heavy-freight rail network, which revolutionized the Australian iron ore export boom.
Mabel is currently resting at the Six Mile yard near Karratha/Dampier in the Pilbara region of north-west Western Australia.
The ALCO S-2 is a 1,000-horsepower (746 kW) diesel electric switcher locomotive.
A total of 1,502 S-2s were built from August 1940 to June 1950.
The S-2 was designed as rail yard switcher, meant to replace older, less efficient, and more demanding steam switchers.
They were a huge success, with many remaining in service today.
